At home worldwide: 200 litres of blood donated

More than 400 members of the District Church Southern Germany donated blood to the Red Cross. Various congregations hosted blood drives over the past several weeks. More than 200 litres of blood were donated.

The hosts of the drive were thrilled that many of the donors were first-time donors. Thanks to the publicity that the drive received, many people decided to get involved. For one of the participating congregations, Stuttgart-Mühlhausen, it was the tenth blood drive. Not only members from the congregation donate, of course, but also people in the area who hear about the event.

“I donate blood to help make a difference in the lives of others and to save lives. That is why I had myself screened,” Christian explains. He is healthy and therefore a suitable donor. And Peter explained, “I needed blood in 1988. It saved my life.”

The blood donor drive in Southern Germany took place around World Blood Donor Day, which falls on 14 June. Blood can be donated any time, of course. Hospitals, charities, walk-in clinics, and donor centres gladly provide information to anyone wishing to make a donation. The websites of the various organizations, among them the Red Cross, are also very helpful.

According to the Red Cross, blood is especially needed for operations and organ transplants. In Germany, as in many other countries, there are a number of organizations that coordinate blood donations. The Red Cross is one of them.

The District Church Southern Germany is planning additional blood donor drives. More information can be found in their online calendar on the district’s website. “More than a good deed” was and is the motto of the brothers and sisters in the south of Germany.
