Divine services can be held in a church or in the open air. But that a service is transmitted to a congregation that worships under a tree does not happen very often.
From Saxsonsea to tree trunk
Not every congregation has a church. Sometimes, the only place for a congregation to gather is under a tree. And sometimes such a tree even is a good spot to hang a computer screen or a television so that the transmission of a divine service can be received from another congregation.
This is what the congregation of Nampula in Mozambique recently did. They fastened a screen to their tree-trunk-cum-church so that they could receive the service District Apostle John L. Kriel was conducting in far-away Saxonsea on South Africa’s west coast. This service was also transmitted to Mozambique. The members in Nampula watched the service sitting on the ground or on chairs. In Hulene, another place where the service was transmitted, one man positioned himself on a rooftop to hear the sermon.
Different, because Christ is our Lord! Youth Day in Berlin
More than 700 young people gathered in our Berlin-Lichtenberg church in Germany at the end of June for their annual day of the youth. The service was conducted by District Apostle Wolfgang Nadolny.
In his sermon he said among other things: “We have a relationship of critical solidarity with people who have not turned to God.” Holy Baptism distinguishes Christians from other people because they have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord. And he added: “We behave differently because Christ is our Lord.”
Practising, observing, feeling! Youth Day in Sierra Leone
Since the church building in Forest Compound is only a small makeshift structure, the eighty some participants gathered at a local school. The divine service was based on 1 Corinthians 14: 15: “What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.”
The West Coast Experience
Lunchhad been arranged for the group at an open-air restaurant on the beach in Langebaan. The freshest seafood and traditional South African dishes were served in a laid-back atmosphere, making for an enjoyable afternoon ahead of a meeting schedule that would last for several days. There was time to pray, sing, and exchange thoughts—strengthening the bonds of fellowship. And fellowship and congregational life do not only take place inside a church.
