A divine service on a sailing ship is not something that happens every day. And even more surprising was the unexpected visit of the District Apostle. Here is the picture and its story.

The District Apostle’s visit had not been announced, so the joy was all the greater when Stefan Pöschel boarded the Iselmar on Wednesday, 23 July 2025, at around half past six in the evening. The ship was moored in the harbour of the small Dutch town of Workum.

The sailing trip has been taking place in the Netherlands annually since 2006 and is open to young people from the western part of Germany and beyond. The youth gave the surprise visitor and his wife a tour of the ship and invited them to dinner. The District Apostle quickly struck up a dialogue with the young people.

Fellowship desired by God

Before anybody could say Jack Robinson, the lounge on the Iselmar was transformed into an improvised church: a makeshift altar was built using two stools and the lounge was prettied up. Someone quickly organised a few flowers from the nearby town.

The sermon was based on Proverbs 17: 17: “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” District Apostle Pöschel emphasised the importance of friendship and kinship in life and in faith.

He recalled the biblical account of creation, in which it becomes clear that human beings were created for companionship. Relationships are not a minor matter, but are intended by God, the District Apostle said. They convey closeness, support, and comfort.

Friendship in all situations

The District Apostle emphasised the significance of the word “always”: difficult times are a test of true friendship. A friend in need is a friend indeed. Those who have a friend or companion at their side in moments of uncertainty, doubt, or crisis often experience God’s closeness anew. Friendship means listening, being there, praying—even when words fail.

With the wish to take the experiences of the day into everyday life, the divine service ended with the celebration of Holy Communion. The District Apostle remained on board for well over another hour, easily engaging with the youth, listening, answering questions, and happy to have snapshots taken for photo memories.
