What does a congregation need to be able to function and live its faith? The wishes around the world are as broad and diverse as the living conditions are. But what is really required? We are going to take a look at an ongoing project that has come up with some surprising answers.

Jeandré, a 15-year old boy from Elspark congregation in Germiston, Gauteng Province, in South Africa has been declared a local hero. He ran into a burning house and rescued a woman in her forties out of the burning kitchen just before the ceiling collapsed.

“Joy in Christ” is not a question of the circumstances. It is not something that is found only there where we are happy and content anyway. This is how District Apostle Barnes in Cape Town in South Africa experienced it. Following is his contribution on our 2015 motto.

It has been five years that he was ordained District Apostle for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Since 1 August 2010, Michael Deppner has been leading the District Church Congo-West that was established at the time. This task brings numerous difficulties with it, but also special experiences.

“Honey, hello, you’re here!” My wife waves her hand in front of my face. “Here in Germany.” Oh, right, I am here, at least physically. But my heart is still in the Congo. I have just returned from a flying visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The country has cast a spell over me.

Whether new congregations or old congregations with creative ideas … there is a lot going on in the New Apostolic world. This time we will take a look at small and large countries as we visit our brothers and sisters in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the USA.

The making of the divine services for 2017 has begun—at least for nearly 30 Apostles from around the world. They are the writers of the Divine Service Guide, which is distributed to nearly 200,000 New Apostolic ministers around the world. The go-ahead was given at a recent authors’ workshop.

Since then this motto has not only accompanied the brothers and sisters around the globe orally and in writing, but it has also been illustrated in the meantime. Snow at Pentecost? A strange phenomenon for those living north of the Equator. But in the Southern Hemisphere this is nothing unusual at this time of the year. In fact, the world is so big and colourful that what seems normal for us may appear novel and perhaps a little unusual for someone else somewhere else. A look at some of our congregations on three continents proves the point.

Crawling through archives generates the sensation of adventure. But browsing through diaries and hitting on interesting pictures is something that can also be done online these days, for instance in the digital reading room of the central archives of the New Apostolic Church North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. And we hit on something interesting: documents covering the first visit of a Chief Apostle to Africa fifty years ago.

One church, many cultures … This was only one of the aspects under which the New Apostolic Church—which is active in nearly all countries worldwide—presented itself at the Evangelical Church Convention in Stuttgart, the largest such gathering in Germany. On the agenda were not only spiritual topics, but also humanitarian aid and the promotion of education.
