You cannot earn it, read it from bank balance, or simply turn it on like water from a tap. So what is blessing really? Here are a few thoughts.

Blessing is not a reward for performance. But blessing is the caring, nearness, and love of God that we all need.

If you have money, if you are you are rich, healthy, wealthy, and very intelligent, that is the understanding of blessing in the Old Testament. When the New Testament speaks about blessing, it is always concerned with the relationship between God and human beings and between human beings and God. That is the true understanding of blessing in the New Testament.

Blessing can therefore not be recognised in one’s prosperity, but in peace and spiritual strength. That is blessing, it comes from Jesus Christ. Are health, wealth, and well-being not blessings? They can be a blessing, but not necessarily. They are only a blessing if they help to strengthen our relationship with God.

What is blessing? Blessing is an expression of God’s love and care. Blessing is an expression of the love of Jesus Christ. He wants to save us. He wants to have eternal fellowship with us and with God. A blessing is therefore anything that helps us to attain eternal fellowship with God. We believe in God’s love and experience this love in the strength He gives us, so that we can remain faithful—no matter what happens. That is blessing.

Blessing is a relationship with God. Those who are blessed have a very close relationship with God. They love God and know that they are loved by God. Blessing means that this relationship becomes ever more steadfast, ever stronger, ever more intense. When you see it this way, you understand it as follows: even in times of trial, in deep distress, I can experience Your nearness and feel Your love. This is blessing—this deeply intimate connection with God that cannot be broken. Even on the worst of days, this relationship endures.

God’s blessing is the salvation He bestows upon us. God’s blessing is everything that contributes to eternal life. It is a spring, a well. It is not a tap. If we want salvation, if we want this blessing, we cannot simply turn on the tap and have the water—the blessing—flow. The image of the spring, the well, tells us: one must go there and draw the water.

What is blessing? Jesus Christ Himself is the blessing. And when we have the fullness of Jesus, it means that there is no longer any emptiness in our lives. Our lives are filled to the brim. We experience Jesus’ nearness, His love, and His help in every area of our lives. There is not a single day or hour that we must spend without Jesus. That is the fullness of blessing. It goes even further: Jesus Christ gives us not only the strength, but also the opportunity and ability to become like Him. There are no gaps left. We will be like Him, one hundred per cent, and for this He grants us His grace. In His kingdom, we will be like Him. That is the fullness of blessing.
