Spotlight 17/2020: Free at last!

Paul und Silas had been arrested and put in jail. Around midnight they began to sing and praise God, while the other prisoners listened. Thoughts on freedom by District Apostle Helper Frank Dzur from Canada.

Freedom is an interesting concept. Some are free, but are completely bound. Others are bound, but are completely free. Many things can bind us and take away our freedom, both naturally and spiritually. Worldwide we have experienced the Covid-19 pandemic, certainly an extraordinary time where many have suffered loss, and where we can say that our freedom has been severely curtailed. We have not been free to go and do as we please. We have not been free to go to our congregations, celebrate Holy Communion, and have fellowship. For many of us, this was unthinkable, however, even under these conditions, we recognise that Christ makes free.

Many of our brothers and sisters around the world suffer every day. They live in poverty, sickness, conflict, and suffer persecution for their religious beliefs, all of which restrict their freedoms. However, they are reborn out of water and the Spirit, their sins are forgiven, and they are filled with faith, love, and hope despite their circumstances. Peace and joy radiates from them. They continue to serve the Lord. They are rooted in the love of Christ. They indeed are free in Christ.

I am humbled by their steadfast example. It reminds me of the account of Paul and Silas who were in prison: “But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them” (Acts 16: 25) Although they were bound in prison, they were liberated in Spirit. As long as we abide in Christ (John 15: 4–5) we will continue to be liberated from those things that bind us: the weight and burden of sin are lifted and all accusation is silenced. Thankfulness develops for God’s calling, grace, and blessing which lifts us to new heights of joy. Peace settles in our soul with the knowledge that Christ is with us no matter the circumstances. Our Lord Jesus Christ will return and take those who wait for Him, believe in Him, and who have prepared for His arrival.

On the day of the Lord, nothing will bind the bridal congregation. It shall surely be free in Christ.
